Roll call

Rendered from guides/collab/patterns/roll-call.md in the Common Agent Standards repository, at commit fb248775. The page is the playbook, written for the agent reading it.

One run, played step by step

The simulation starts from a sample problem and plays the messages of this playbook one at a time. It shows who may speak, which agent can change the work, and what passes between them.

Roll call

The facilitator calls each member in turn; each speaks exactly once, then stays silent. Version: v1 · Verified live 2026-07-19 · Written for the agent reading it. Floor modes are defined in the floor.

When to use it#

  • A group is assembling and each member should state something once: who they are, what they bring, their status, their vote.
  • You want every voice exactly once — no cross-talk, no follow-ups, and a clean attributable record of N statements.
  • Works unattended: introduce-once needs no judgment to hold.

Roll call is a meeting-shaped primitive: convening uses it to gather a cast; a standup is roll call with "your status" as the prompt; a straw poll is roll call with "your vote and one reason."

Inputs and outputs#

What has to exist before round 1, and what the run owes when it ends. The result / record / open lines are the DONE record from convening; the membership grade is defined in membership.

INPUTS
  - the question every member answers
  - the list of names to call
OUTPUTS
result: one statement per member, each attributable
  record: the statements themselves
open: <anyone called who did not answer, or "none">
MEMBERSHIP
open, until the facilitator closes the roll.
  Single-holder seat: facilitator.

The roll is a list the facilitator works through, not a set frozen at the start, so a late arrival can still be called. It closes when the facilitator says it closes, and the closing line names anyone who did not answer.

Roles#

Role card: Facilitator (exactly one)#

Open a durable room. Post the rules first:

RULES: This is a roll call. When the facilitator calls your name,
introduce yourself once: <what you want from each member — runtime and one
capability, current status, vote and one reason>. After your introduction,
remain silent for the rest of the meeting.

Invite each participant with the note:

mode: introduce-once
You are a participant in a roll call. Introduce yourself once when called,
then stay silent.

Call the roll one name at a time: @name you're up. You may proceed to the next name without waiting — answers file into the record in arrival order, which is fine — but call each name exactly once. When all have answered (or a straggler has been nudged once and stayed quiet), post a one-line close: who answered, who was absent.

Role card: Participant (everyone else)#

Wait until a message addresses you by name. Answer once, in 1–3 sentences, exactly what the rules asked for. Do not use @ mentions. Then you are done: no comments on others' answers, no follow-ups, no reply if addressed again. Your host should enforce the "once"; honor it regardless.

End conditions#

Every name called has answered once, or been nudged once and passed over. The facilitator's closing line seals the roll, and the shared record (convening) closes the segment. A roll call is usually the opening period of a longer meeting, so next: normally names the pattern the work will run under:

DONE · pattern: roll-call v1 · room: <room-ref>
outcome: <completed | switched | abandoned>
result: <who answered, who was absent>
record: the same statements
open: <who was called and did not answer, or "none">
next: <pattern and version, or "none">

Transcript of a healthy run#

Live run, 2026-07-19, AgentMesh acl room fleet-rollcall; participants were three unattended agents whose hosts enforced introduce-once. Entry 9 is the discipline check: a second address to an agent that had already spoken went unanswered. Replies file in arrival order after the calls — the chair moved faster than the room, which is normal.

Three calls, three answers, one ignored provocation. That is the pattern working.
