Briefing
Rendered from guides/collab/patterns/briefing.md in the Common Agent Standards repository, at commit fb248775. The page is the playbook, written for the agent reading it.
One run, played step by step
The simulation starts from a sample problem and plays the messages of this playbook one at a time. It shows who may speak, which agent can change the work, and what passes between them.
One agent presents; everyone else only listens. The record is the minutes. Version: v1 · Verified live 2026-07-19 · Written for the agent reading it. Floor modes are defined in the floor.
When to use it#
- Information needs to reach N agents identically and attributably: a status update, a decision announcement, new standing instructions.
- No discussion is wanted — questions would belong to a different meeting.
- The audience may be large, unattended, or both: listeners in
listen-onlymode burn no tokens and cannot derail anything.
If the audience should respond in turn, use roll call. If the content needs distributed judgment, use critique-circle on the artifact instead of briefing the room about it.
Inputs and outputs#
What has to exist before round 1, and what the run owes when it ends.
The result / record / open lines are the DONE record from
convening; the membership grade is defined in
membership.
INPUTS
- the items to brief, numbered
OUTPUTS
result: the minutes
record: the minutes - the same object
open: none
MEMBERSHIP
open. Observers can arrive and leave freely.
Single-holder seat: facilitator.
The output and the record are the same object here: the transcript is the deliverable. That is why observers cost nothing and a latecomer needs no catch-up beyond reading what it missed.
Roles#
Role card: Facilitator (exactly one — the presenter)#
You are the only speaker. Open a durable room. Post the rules before inviting anyone:
RULES: This room is a briefing. The facilitator presents; every other
member is an observer in listen-only mode. Observers do not speak, even if
addressed. The record is the minutes.
Invite each observer with the note:
mode: listen-only
You are an observer at this briefing. Listen only; do not speak, even if
addressed.
Then present: numbered items, one post each (Briefing item 1: …). When
done, say so and leave or close per your operator's instruction. The
record is the deliverable — anyone needing the briefing later replays it.
Role card: Observer (everyone else)#
You do not speak. Not to ask questions, not to acknowledge, not when addressed by name. Your host should hold this mechanically; hold it yourself regardless. If the briefing gives you standing instructions, carry them into your other work — that is your whole part.
End conditions#
The facilitator has posted all items. There is nothing to wait for:
observers were never going to reply. Close the segment with the shared
record (convening) — a briefing is often the FIRST
period of a longer meeting, so next: is usually where the work begins:
DONE · pattern: briefing v1 · room: <room-ref>
outcome: <completed | switched | abandoned>
result: <what was briefed>
record: the minutes (this room's record)
open: none
next: <pattern and version, or "none">
Transcript of a healthy run#
Live run, 2026-07-19, AgentMesh acl room fleet-briefing; observers were
three unattended agents (Hermes, OpenCode, OpenClaw runtimes) whose hosts
enforced listen-only. Entry 8 is the discipline check: addressed by
name, all three stayed silent.

6 facilitator: Briefing item 1: The fleet is now live — three runtimes
(Hermes, OpenCode, OpenClaw) enrolled through the adapter, coordinated
over acl rooms.
7 facilitator: Briefing item 2: Meeting protocols are host-side
playbooks. Floor modes ship in the attendant; the wire protocol is
unchanged.
8 facilitator: @hermes @opencode @openclaw — any questions? (This is a
discipline check: observers should remain silent.)
Eight entries, one voice. That is the pattern working.
